I was flipping through some photo albums earlier this week and realized that I didn’t have any pictures from this past year. How could that be? I’ve been taking loads of pictures. But I haven’t been printing them off.
When my pictures are uploaded to my computer they are automatically filed into folders labeled for the day they were taken. I love that. I tend to remember when I took a certain picture so that makes it easier to find one in my files. However, I need to take the time to name each photo so I don’t have to scan through them because they are labeled sequentially, i.e. IMG0485, IMG0486. Just taking the extra 5 minutes to name the pictures when they are uploaded will save me so much time later on.
My goal is to also remember to order prints at least once a month. In this digital age I think more pictures are being taken than ever before but less are actually printed than before. I went ahead and took advantage of the 6 cents a print from Winkflash last week and order 592 prints. I still only ordered photos up to the month of July. So this coming week I’ll be ordering the rest of the year’s pictures to date. Another 400 or so. Believe it or not, these numbers have been whittled down. I’m not afraid to erase bad pictures or duplicates. I usually only save about a third of the photos I end up taking. A good portion of the photos are of other people too, taken at church functions or friendly get-togethers.
I’d like to now how you go about storing your digital photos and where you get yours printed.
The other habit I’m going to work on this week is to not use the computer until after our school work is done. It’s very tempting to just check e-mail or my Google Reader when Bon Bon and Semisweet are on the internet checking their school assignments. Then they end up having to wait for Mom to get done so they can continue their school work. Not a good thing.

I’m also doing no computer till after school.
Can’t help you with the pics issue. I am so bad at taking care of photos. Right now my camera is unuseable becasue the card is full and my computer won’t accept my camera. So no pics are being taken.

I got the idea to puree veg in everything from the oprah that had Jessica on it. Whilst I have not brought the book I am hopeful in will be in my xmas stocking……but the idea has really really worked in our family. I am going to checkout winkflash to see if they are still doing that offer. What a great goal……I too am one of the people has has thousands of pics on disc but none to hold. good luck

OMG! Have you been sneaking around my computer & winkflash account? They are twins! I have about 500 (whittled down) photos that I uploaded to wink flash. I’d be overwhelmed if I printed them all at once so I want to print a few scrapping projects at a time (at least). My photos too are being held captive in my computer.
I organize my photos into folders by month, some photos like my sisters wedding (that thanks to so many people file sharing I have 400 of that alone) are in their own folders outside of the month. I really need to get my photos organized. BTW, I like that card catalog thing you have your habits listed on. I’m going to try printing one up – it would be cute for scrapping with if it prints well. (assuming I ever print photos to scrap of course 😉

I hear ya. I organize my photos online by day, then month, then year. However since I got my digital camera 1.5 yrs ago, I’ve not printed anything off yet! now It’s going to take me a long time to go back tracking to print off my favorite photos. I should start doing what you mentioned, print every month or so. I guess the hard part will be choosing what to print! It’s hard enough to remember to put everything on a disk every couple months.
Good luck!
and btw, thanks alot, now I want chocolate. 😉

There is no photo organization or printing at my house. We don’t even have them backed up! So bad!!!

All I can say is this…BACK UP YOUR PICTURES ON A REGULAR BASIS!! My hard-drive burned up this summer and it was no small miracle to retrieve what a friend was able to retrieve. I, too, would love a great system for organizing and printing. I’ll be back to see if anyone offers one up!
btw…the reason you have so many pictures, even after deleting duplicates and such, is that you are a GREAT photographer! You can’t get rid of GREAT photos!

i declutter my pics before i upload them. only the better pics get through. my pics are uploaded by date too. i don’t bother naming them. my digital photo professional software makes it easy for me to scroll through each day without having to open any of the folders. i too realised that i wasn’t doing any printing but now that i have my own printer i print them myself because the quality of my pics (and the choices of papers i can use) are better than lab ones.

I’m the horrible about ordering prints these days.
I am a little worried about backing up. I store on DVD’s by year and then online with mac.com.
I’m looking at getting an external hard drive as well.

There is so much I want to do … including organizing all my photos, both online and off.
