I feel like I’m back in grade school with this assignment. Why is it so hard for me to write poetry? Maybe I’m afraid to just let go, to let my emotions break through. Or maybe I just haven’t experienced poetry enough. Regardless, here are my juvenile attempts.
A sense poem from day 19 of 30 days of poetry
verdigris alfalfa fields
sweet spicy sagebrush
children’s hearty laughter
arid Nevada heat
ice cold lemonade
heaven on earth
The following is called a spine poem. You write down the title to a favorite book. Each word of the book title becomes the first word of a new line in your poem. This was fun for my kids to do.
We sang until there
were no notes left and
not a sound escaped until
alone you left me there to cry.
Those are my two contributions this week. I did remember that I wrote a poem several years ago but only because I intended to put it to music as a hymn (ha,ha). I wasn’t kidding when I said about the only time I was interested in poetry was when it was put to music. Still haven’t discovered a melody I like, but here are the words.
The wondrous works thy hands have wrought,
The majesty of thy being,
Doth cause within my humble heart,
A peaceful quiet knowing.
Thou art my Savior, my Master, my Healer,
My soul from sin redeem.
Oh, beautiful Lord, my Rock, my Pillar,
Thou King of all supreme!
Thy suffering pains no man could share,
In agony that night spent!
And still, next day, the cross to bear,
That all mankind might repent.
Three days thy body lay in tomb,
My Lord, the Anointed One.
What joy is found, the empty tomb!
Victory over death is won!
Thou art my Savior, my Master, my Healer,
My soul from sin redeem.
Oh beautiful Lord, my Rock, my Pillar,
Thou King of all supreme!
My sins are great, my soul doth grieve,
“O wretched man that I am!”
Yet, in thy bosom, sweet reprieve,
Cleansed by the blood of the Lamb!

Your hymn is beautiful. When you find a melody, I hope you’ll share it with us.

Your poems are wonderful!
This was really challenging and super fun. I have just been incorporating more poetry into our school day, so your timing was perfect as well.

I love your poems. You put way more thought and work into this than I did. Thanks for the opportunity!

Thanks for the 30 -day poetry link. I’ll let my kids run through it and then let them teach me how to write a real poem.
Your hymn is powerful and your poem of your life in NV add emotion and words to the beautiful photos you often post

Very nice. I love to play with composing as well. It combines two loves for me, music and poetry.

I love the 30 day site, so many different ideas that are just made to help keep my kids writing (and busy) this summer. I love your poems, and your hymn feels like one I would love to have come to mind when I least expect it…I’m sure you’ll find the perfect melody…can’t wait.

Your hymn is wonderful…why don’t you just write the tune? Then you’ll like it for sure! I will have to try the book one, very interesting. And, I just read my comments and LOL at yours…I will be smiling about that for a long time. I’m proud to be from a half-Witted Crook!

I can really imagine singing that at church someday! This was a challenge for me but I enjoyed it!

Those are really wonderful poems, Cocoa! I also hope you find the melody for that hymn. Those words are so heartfelt!

I agree you should submit this to the church- Why don’t we add new music to the hymnal?
