If you’ve been a blog reader for the past couple of months you’ve seen my posts about using music to build spirituality (part I and part II). This is not something new or recent in my life, finding music that is uplifting and good to listen to for everyone. I even wrote about some of my experiences last year. Knowing how I feel about music . . . . . have I got a treat for you today!
Have you heard of The Nashville Tribute Band? Its a group of LDS musicians – most based in Nashville – who collaborate together to pay tribute to parts of our Mormon history or faith. Their first album, “Joseph: a Nashville Tribute to the Prophet” is one of the best-selling LDS albums ever. Their second album is “Trek: A Nashville Tribute to the Mormon Pioneers,” You can listen to snippets of songs from their albums here.
The Nashville Tribute Band is releasing a new CD, a Nashville Tribute to the Missionaries, called “The Work.” The songs on the album cover all aspects of missionary work, from a young missionary praying to know for himself if serving a mission is what the Lords wants him to do to a mother praying for her son’s success and protection as a missionary to an elderly sister serving a mission in the ‘twilight of her years.’ The CD won’t be released until August 4th when The Nashville Tribute Band kicks off the release with a concert in Sandy, UT. You can read all about the concert here. (Valerie, you would love it!) Other concerts will be held:
August 5: Twin Falls, ID
August 6: Rexburg, ID
August 12 – 13: Grants Pass, OR
But guess, what? Two of you can win the CD and receive it BEFORE it goes on sale! I have two of them right here in front of me – sent straight from Camille T. of R Legacy Entertainment. Well, actually I have three but the third one is mine. 🙂 I have listened to it several times this week driving the long distance to and from town taking little Ganache in for bilirubin checks for his jaundice. I love it! The songs have a good beat, the lyrics aren’t overpowered by the instruments, and of course, the message of each song bears testimony of some aspect of missionary work.
I grew up listening to Peter, Paul, and Mary sing “Children Go Where I Send Thee” every Christmas. {My dad was a big fan of theirs} so imagine my surprise when the first song on the album is the whole band singing “Children Go Where I Send Thee” in tight harmonies but with a Mormon twist on the lyrics.
“Children, go where I send thee
How will I send thee?
Oh I’m gonna send thee three by three
Three for the tree in Lehi’s dream
Two for Alma and Amulek
One for the little bitty baby
Born, born, born in Bethlehem”
It is my favorite song of the album, probably because of the memories of singing the song growing up, but also because of the harmony. LOVE IT! Another of my favorites from “The Work” is ‘Today is the Day’ performed by David Osmond. Here’s part of the chorus,
“Today is the day I will open my mouth
I will shout from the rooftops
The truth will come out
And I’m sharing my soul in the words that I speak
With the love that has made me this way
Yes today is the day I proclaim what I believe”
Truly, that is what the missionaries do on a daily basis – proclaim what they believe to the world. And as readers of this blog know, something I’m not ashamed to do here either. ☺
You can get a feel for their music from this single released from the new album, called I Was Born.

Thanks for bringing these to my attention – I hadn’t heard of them before. I like the ideas of moms, but parents/families would be better. To instill in our children the absolute importance of families. How about the Proclamation to the World in song?! Primary kids is another great idea….so are teenagers who are making the important decisions to serve missions, go to college, date, etc. (gentleartofchaos (at) hotmail (dot) com)

Sounds like a great CD! I’d love a tribute to moms! 🙂

Hi, I have never heard of “The National Tribute Band” before. My son is leaving on his mission soon and this would be a great gift for him. The first thought I had for their next tribute was Prophets, or modern day Prophets. I really like the idea of a tribute to families though.
Congratulations on the newest member of your family!

I first heard them at a TOFW conference where they performed music from the Tribute to Joseph. I was lucky enough to experience their concert twice.
I also purchased the Tribute to the Pioneers which is awesome as well of course I have my favorites 🙂 Somewhere there’s a mountain is forever sketched on my heart.
Please enter me in your giveaway. The release of this CD is perfect timing as we are working on my son’s mission papers. 🙂 Thanks.
My idea for another tribute …. hmm I like the idea about a tribute to the family and also a tribute to various prophets. I would love for my kids to go around singing about Ammon or Moroni 🙂

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that they have a new album!!!!! I think having a tribute for families, and maybe how each person plays an important part- so it could be toward moms, dads, the teens, the children, the grandparents, even military families… it’s really getting harder to keep everyone focused on what we are supposed to be focusing on, and with the tumultuous events that are happening daily, it is more important than ever to figure out how to do that… (pilotwife5@gmail.com)

I also love NTB songs. I have often thought a tribute to our leaders would be great. Stake leaders, Bishoprics and auxiliary presidencies do so much and they are on the front lines, so to speak! Service is key in our church and I can imagine there are alot of songs to be written about the opportunities out there!!

Love these guys. They (Jason, Dan and Ron)were here in Kitchener a year ago and just blew everyone’s mind and grew their spirit’s that day. I get emails quite often from attendees asking when this new CD will come out. A year later and i am THRILLED, so much so that I found a cheap flight out of Detroit and will be attending the Sandy show. My one week of vacation and all the money I have and I am not regretting the choice at all. My son just went into the MTC a month ago so, while I am listening to the CD release concert with my son just a few miles away, learning spanish. If I did win the CD I would drop it off to him as he will be able to listen to it in Chile. I am also going to give him my copies of Joseph and The Trek. If he couldn’t listen to anything else, I would choose this for him.
Then he can share it with his companions and it will come back to Jason manyfold. And yes…I will still have enough money to buy my own copy. (my son would NOT get the autographed copy, should i get it signed. he he
I love him but not THAT much! 🙂
Enjoy life and chocolate and the Tribute series.
As for subject matter ahhhhhhhh….singles, Mom’s, Dad’s kids with or without mom’s and Dad’s, those who’s families have shunned them, widows, priesthood leaders, their wives who are the church ‘widows”, women who will never marry, divorced ones, handicapped social, mentally, physically, the resilient ones, who have little chance of the regular social life and hopes and dreams we have, parentless children, parents of children who have wandered……..A Tribute to Us.
Would someone like ME make it past ‘my’ Sugar Creek. 🙂
Thanks for letting me think about this.

If I win I’m giving it to Sue – who has known me since I was born (crazy bumping into you on this blog!) and is a great lady! My first thought was a tribute to temple work of all sorts – building, family history, your own work, across the world, etc. I love the idea of children and family. Maybe also scripture story heroes. Whatever it is, I’m sure it’ll be good!

Hi! I too love your blog and NTB! My children and I have been counting down the days until The Work’s release. Can’t wait to hear it! We think NTB should pay tribute to the Relief Society/Motherhood. ppmsister@gmail.com
Miss Boone says
There are so many great ideas already listed, and I’m sure the NTB will eventually get to them all, but after careful thought, I’m gonna have to go with the ultimate, the Savior. If there is a time we need to ever so strongly declare ever so loudly and proudly that Latter Day Saints are Christians at the heart, the time is now. I would love to see the NTB remix some of the hymns and children’s songs dedicated to the Savior. The Savior is my vote. ; )
