Dear Poor Neglected Blog,
I know you have been waiting patiently for me to update or write a fantastic post or something but I am rather busy right now with more important things. Plus my brain is fried.
The three oldest started high school on Monday. We were going to start the younger children on the same day but only one hour into the school day, I nixed that idea. You see, after so many “Mom! I need help!”outbursts it was Mom that needed the help! And quick. So the little ones were let loose to start on Labor Day instead. Brownie’s need to learn how to navigate the online high school system was greater than everyone starting on the same day. Keeping Mom sane might have also had something to do with it.
Tuesday was spent getting all the entries for the county fair ready. Helping girls finish quilts, printing off photos, etc takes a lot longer than what you think! There were also many more outbursts of “Mom!” So many, in fact, that Brownie remarked, “I wonder how many times a day we say Mom. I should count. Actually, maybe not. I know I would lose track. At least you know we need you!” Ha!
The one child who DIDN’T call for mom’s help. |
Wednesday morning was spent helping Fudge and Truffle bake Sour Cream Blueberry Muffins and Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies – more entries for the fair. In a scene eerily reminiscent of last year, I raced to town to get the entries there on time, waited five minutes at a railroad crossing for a train, and made it with two minutes to spare. Whew! Then I spent several hours, sans children, judging 4H Photography fair entries. That was fun…and stressful at the same time. Actually the judging part was easy, writing appropriate critique comments on the judging sheet was the hard part.
Thursday will be spent going through all the littles’ school supplies and books, organizing them for Monday, and going over “rules of engagement” with them – i.e. this time frame is when Mom can help you, this time frame is when you work on school yourself so don’t pester Mom when she is helping someone else. Do you think that will work?
Amidst all the hustle and bustle there were some highlights:
- Coming home from church on Sunday to find bags and boxes of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and green peppers and one HUGE watermelon from friends in California who has come to hunt antelope
- Fresh tomato soup for Monday’s dinner
- BLT sandwiches {with loads of bacon!} for Tuesday’s lunch
- Listening to Hershey sing over 20 songs to herself in one morning
- Cooler nights – the mornings even get a bit chilly!
- Starting seminary bright and early on Monday morning. We are studying the New Testament this year!
- Laughing with the family as we read “Cheaper By the Dozen”
- Getting over 500 points in a Words with Friends game {and creaming my brother in the process}
- Awaiting the arrival of a new
niece or nephew on Thursday {today!}It’s a boy!!! Little baby Heber.
You see, you can’t blame me too much for neglecting you. There has been a lot going on around here.
Talk again soon {or maybe not},

Sounds like life here, these days. Minus the judging and homeschooling. Irish Jig helped herself to rice krispies and yogurt, and managed to create a huge mess in the process. The new kitchen floor went in, several friends have used us as a drop in day care for various emergencies. My house looks like a bomb went off and I just keep sneaking off to sew! It’s awesome, this life we get.

Try the “Life of Fred” for science and math. You won’t regret it.

‘Tis the season, I suppose. 🙂 We’ve been crazy busy here as well. I’m pretty certain my blogspace is growing cobwebs somewhere, ha! Ah, but it’s all right. Taking deep breaths & enjoying the family moments as they come. 🙂 Best wishes!

I was just thinking you and your older girls would enjoy “Daddy Long Legs.” Have you read it? It was written over 100 years ago and is considered to be the very first novel in the “young adult” genre.
An orphan girl is sent off to college, by a mysterious benefactor, and he only asks that she write him monthly letters on her progress in return. So the book is made up entirely of those letters.
It is a very sweet story.

I’m sure you already know this, but make sure your littles know to move on to something else, if they get stuck and need you, and it is not their turn. Otherwise, they might think it is time to mess around, so they can get mom’s attention by misbehaving. A lesson I learned the hard way, many, many years ago.

Phew! I actually find it comforting to know other people are called into a million pieces… I need to follow your example and carve out the special teaching times!
