I came across this article today about a 23 year old man who, because of the development of better, more powerful hearing aids, can now hear music for the first time in his life. By now he has listened to a wide variety of music, with country music being his least favorite because, to his ears, it sounds like a man or woman crying for two to three minutes. So true! ☺

My question: If you knew someone in this situation, what music would you recommend they listen to?
Pretty much anything from the romantic period of classical music. ( : Respigi’s The Pines of Rome is a favorite. Dvorak’s New World Symphony. Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 is the best!
Beethoven and Jack Johnson – then on to Broadway musicals (which has a little bit of everything!) Yes, I’m eclectic!
Speaking as a HOH girl (Hard-of-hearing), I was able to get a new digital aid that has different programs on it. One of them being for music. I went home, sat down at my piano and played from memory First Arabesque by Claude Debussy…. and wept. The notes sounded to me more vibrant, rounded, exquisite. I was (and still am) grateful for my piano teacher who insisted I learn pieces in the higher range than what I can normally hear. My suggestion? Anything classical.

Marachi music is always fun, Bing Crosby, the MoTabs, Handel’s Messiah, and Christmas music. Aaron Copland, Gustav Holst, John Williams, he could have lots of fun sampling folk stuff from all over the world…What a wonderful blessing music is!!

Etc.
Listen to ALL KINDS! (Okay, leave out the rap and the dark, screaming kind.) And then pick out some favorites and listen to more of those.
I’d go for something like Peer Gynt…can you imagine the power of hearing Hall of the Mountain King for the first time?!
Mmmm, I am a jazz kind of girl. Blues also top my list of fav’s. That’s what I would have to tell him to start with. 🙂
What a fascinating thought! I think Debussy would be an excellent place to start. If the person were LDS, I would actually listen to the children’s songs from Primary, because the melodies are simple and memorable. Just as a good place to start. I sing those kinds of songs to my children when they are little because they respond so well. They also loved classical music.
Some of my favorites are Chopin, Liszt, and Tchaikovsky!
