It is a banner year for families in the church! Not only is it the 20th anniversary of the Family Proclamation but this Monday, April 27th, marks the 100th anniversary of the Family Home Evening program. To celebrate I am teaming up with seven other bloggers to share a family home evening lesson created from one of the General Conference talks given at the beginning of April.
I chose to create a lesson based on Cheryl A. Esplin’s talk, “Filling Our Homes with Light and Truth.”
The lesson starts off with the example Sister Esplin gave at the beginning of her talk about the visual presentation of using two soda cans, one empty and one full, and how they each react under pressure.
We can liken this demonstration to our individual lives and to our home and family. What can we do to fill our our home spiritually so we can be like the filled can and not collapse under pressure? Sister Esplin teaches us,
When filled with the Spirit and with gospel truth, we have the power to withstand the outside forces of the world that surround and push against us. However, if we are not filled spiritually, we don’t have the inner strength to resist the outside pressures and can collapse when forces push against us.
As part of the lesson you will discuss each specific suggestion given by Sister Esplin in her talk filling in a house with words strips. This can be hung in your home as a visual reminder for your family.
There are also two posters included with quotes from the talk to hang in your home as well. Throughout the lesson you will read eight quotes taken from the talk and discuss how to apply the teachings to your own family.
Sister Esplin ended her talk by saying, “As we fill our hearts and homes with the Savior’s light and truth, we will have the inner strength to withstand in every circumstance.” It is my hope that this lesson along with the other family home evening lessons created by the other bloggers will help you and your family fill your homes with gospel truth and light.

This is wonderful! My husband and I were just talking about how to incorporate some of the General Conference talks into our FHE lessons, and then this morning I see this! I am excited to use some of these lessons to help our family study the words we have been taught in General Conference!

Isn’t it great? With the lessons done by these bloggers you have the next two months of FHE taken care of!

We covered this same talk last week for our FHE! We watched Sister Esplin’s talk, and then we talked about how it applied to us personally, as a family, and then as a ward family. As we were talking about ways that our lives (cans) get punctured and hurt as a result of mean people, bad choices, etc. we asked, “What can we do to fix that puncture that surely will come to all of us?” He quickly responded: “Duct Tape IT!” Cute! Indeed, the Savior provides the Duct Tape so we can be repaired and made whole again! We concluded the evening but getting the fun colored duct tape out, and covering, protecting, fortifying our cans with duct tape so we can remember to stay strong and protected in this world, trusting our Savior to help us! It was a great lesson! Thanks Sister Esplin! Taught it again last night at a stake fireside!

I can’t find the link to download…is it missing? Or maybe my computer is having issues. Thanks for the help!
Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} says
Sorry about that Torri! I was working with my host site trying to resolve some issues with the blog and had to temporarily disable downloads. It should be working again.
